Foster et al. 2001 def. that lots of people have used

I. Foster, C. Kesselman and S. Tuecke, The Anatomy of the Grid, Interna- tional Journal of High performance Computing Applications, 15, 3, 2001

  • "a dynamic collection of individuals and institutions which are required to share resources to achieve certain goals"

VOMS team work

Extended the definition slightly - more emphasis on users, rather than institutions.

  • R. Alfieri, R. Cecchini, V. Ciaschini, F. Spataro, L. dell'Agnello, A. Frohner and K. Lörentey, From gridmap-file to VOMS: managing Authorization in a Grid environment, Future Generation Computer Systems, 2005, [WWW] http://grid-auth.infn.it/docs/voms-FGCS.pdf, April, 2004.

CCLRC (UK) work

See http://epubs.cclrc.ac.uk/search?mpp=25&q=virtual+organisations for a list of documents. A lot of the documents were unobtainable due to a repository problem when I looked (-- markn 2006-02-21 12:39:45) so I have only described those which I could reach.

Building Trust on the GRID (2001)

Building Trust on the GRID: Trust Issues Underpinning Scalable Virtual Organisations, Brian Matthews, Juan Bicarregui, Theo Dimitrakos

Trustcom (2004)

Trustcom - A Trust and Contract management Framework enabling Secure Collaborations in Dynamic Virtual Organisations, eo Dimitrakos, Michael Wilson and Santi Ristol, ERCIM News 59 59-60 (2004).

  • Similar to the Foster et al. use:
    • "...dynamically evolving virtual organisations (VO) spanning national and enterprise borders, where the participating entities (enterprises or individuals) pool resources, information and knowledge in order to achieve common objectives."

There are other Trustcom documents which appear to use the same definition/scoping statement as this one.

Multilayer Privilege Management... (2004)

Multilayer Privilege Management for Dynamic Collaborative Scientific Communities, David Chadwick, Theo Dimitrakos, Kerstin Kleese-Van Dam, Damian Mac Randal, Brian Matthews, Alexander Otenko, UK Workshop on Grid Security Experiences, Oxford 8th and 9th July 2004 Seems to use the same VO concept as the Trustcom statement (again, similar to Foster et al. 2001) but considers authorisation issues (in particular) of collaborating research communities.

Request Based Virtual Organisation (RBVO)... (2005)

Distributed E-business Architecture for SME Communities – Requirements and Solutions for Request Based Virtual Organisations, Adomas Svirskas, Bob Roberts, Proc. IADIS International Conference Web Based Communities 2005: Expanding markets through virtual communities, Algarve, Portugal, 23-25 Feb 2005 http://epubs.cclrc.ac.uk/bitstream/602/CCLRC-CARIS-IADIS-WBC-2005-paper-v5.pdf

  • Read this one! This talks about Request-based VOs as a specific type of VO. This is nearer the definition to which I (MN) was alluding on our main page, but still talks about sharing resources to some extent. It's nicely described, though.

Nate Klingenstein's wiki thoughts on VOs

At https://authdev.it.ohio-state.edu/twiki/bin/view/Main/VirtualOrganizations

A small excerpt:

  • "...a VO:

    1. Relies on principals defined and authenticated by organizations;

    2. Creates and manages additional attributes about these principals that aren't suited for enterprise directories or are more appropriately asserted by the VO;

    3. Asserts these attributes about these people to specific applications and services, possibly in addition to attributes asserted by the original O's, in a tight trust framework. "
