The broad remit of this project is to run the 'do you bIT' campaign at Oxford, and provide support for other organisations to run similar initiatives. The campaign will see to encourage as many people as possible to take IT-related energy efficiency seriously e.g. switch desktop computer to low-power states, safely and reliably when they are not in use.

Main objectives:

 * Try to persuade Janet(UK) to host a monitoring and wake on LAN service for Liverpool University to evaluate whether it can be offered more broadly.
 * Explore the use of agent-based modelling in persuading people that 'doing their bit' matters
 * Promote the 5 steps to reducing IT-related energy efficiency across the University of Oxford
 * Work with vendors to show their solutions fit in with the 5 steps

WOL service at Liverpool

This work task is focused on setting up a WOL service at Liverpool University using the software developed at Oxford.

Ideally the solution will be built in a way that it can be given to a hosting service (such as Janet(UK) who can then offer the service nationally.

  • Design document
  • Give gateway software to Liverpool (NB Windows site license)
  • Sort out distribution of all code and documentation as per suggestions from Dominic and David F

Monitoring service

  • Enhancements to the manage interface
  • Configure manage interface at OeRC, OUCS and OUCE
  • New graph that shows % of total nodes found throughout the day and night
  • Get support from colleges and departments
  • Get agreement from OUCS to host the service
  • Change permissions structure so the graph can be public

Campaign

  • Develop model library and guide
  • ITSS conference
  • Tool box including commercial solutions
  • Do your bIT logo

Ideas

  • Oxford-only poll
  • Howard to set up bIT prediction market: http://markets.nitle.org/

  • Write up groupware case study with Mark N
  • Write up procurement advice with Maria C
  • Copy security review process for green IT e.g. survey that asks for self assessment on key issues
