Welcome to the EU project managers wiki page. A wiki is a tool that allows distributed people to collaborate in the creation of web pages. Once you have learn a few tricks regarding editing then you will be well underway.

This page is visible to the world but can only be edited by people with an account in this wiki.

It is up to this group to decide how to use this wiki, below are some suggested starting points.

Places to hold meetings

Germany

One of the most beautiful places is Freiburg, a little University town in the Black Forest, next to France and Switzerland. The city has good facilities like a concert and conference-centre in the middle of the old town. Maybe also some University rooms can be used for the conference. The location is great, only disadvantage is that the city in the absolute south-west of Germany has no own airport, next airport is Basel/Mulhouse in France, this is about 50 minutes bus transfer. (Or airport Stuttgart which is better connected by international airlines and low cost airlines but 2 hours by train). The city offers an old town in a great surrounding. You can climb up some stairs from the pedestrian zone in the centre and you are in the forest! The city has the image of capital-ecological city in Germany. There is no industry around; it is a city of science, culture and tourism. I know this city very good because I studied there, so I could help you with more detailed information on sightseeing etc.

Heidelberg is one of the most famous tourism cities in Germany, next bigger city is Frankfurt. The city is often overcrowded because many tourists form all over the world (many Japanese) are visiting this beautiful city. But it's worth it and a bit similar to Freiburg. Tourist will find there an old castle and a beautiful old town. I don't know the conference locations there but you will find information on the website of the conference and tourist service. The city is really beautiful and better located for international participants because it takes 50 Minutes to reach Frankfurt airport, which is one of the biggest German airports, by train. It is also a smaller city with a University and a warm atmosphere in a natural surrounding.

Munich of course is different. Although it is a big city with every kind of cultural offers it has a very special atmosphere in the Bavarian style. But it is one of the biggest cities in Germany and really expensive. I would recommend it if they wish the atmosphere of a cosmopolitan styled city.

If you have some more detailed information about the group and their interests I could give you more detailed tips. Maybe there is a location which will fit to the thematic of the conference. Do they look for a quiet place without any distraction? I know some very "special" places: For example there are places located in the nature, like old monasteries, which are now modern places for conferences. These places are often not so good reachable by public transport and so it would be necessary to organize a common bus trip for the participants.

Project tools

Below are some useful tools, well I say useful but that is maybe just my personal choice. The we all face as project managers is that we must make decisions on the best tools for a GROUP of people not just ourselves. Embedding tools in a community of practice is an art and something we are very interested in at Oxford (Howard Noble).
