Metadata Schemes
Each department should determine what metadata scheme they would like to use to catalogue their images. Metadata exposed by the system should be compatible with Dublin Core
Suggested schemes
Dublin Core
http://dublincore.org/documents/dces/ Dublin Core, a simplistic set of metadata terms that are adequate for describing digital resources. We will be exposing information about images in the OXCLIC system as Dublin Core data as it is the most commonly used metadata standard.
VRA: Visual Resources Association
VRA: Visual Resources Association, http://www.vraweb.org/vracore3.htm VRA Core 3.0, is a set of metadata terms specifically designed for describing images and works of art.
A VRA record is divided into a description of a WORK (that is, an object, person or place) and an IMAGE (a slide, photo or a digital image that is a representation of a WORK)
Template Portfolio files
Always start with a blank Portfolio catalogue template OxCLIC_Portfolio
- Customise the metadata fields to include those relevant to the collection
There is a downloadable template here, OxCLIC_Portfolio this includes VRA fields relevant to the History of Art).
